Claypath

Lower Claypath is a highly significant development opportunity in central Durham, occupying a key location that is at once both a historically important part of the city and central to aspirations to extend and strengthen the city centre core by establishing a contemporary ‘cultural quarter’ to the north of the peninsula.

This apparent contradiction between the historic and the contemporary should not be seen as something
which might sterilise the site or compromise redevelopment potential, but as something that provides a
unique opportunity for distinctive and exceptional buildings and spaces. Through a responsive design
approach development can both respect the historic context and help demonstrate Durham’s position as a
modern, progressive city that is able to accommodate economic growth and cater for the needs and
aspirations of its communities and visitors.
