Developed design images for Durham City’s Market Place and Vennels, following the planned £5.25M re-vamp, were made public on April 24 2009.
This is part of the ongoing public engagement by Durham City Vision and it is important that as many people as possible have the opportunity to see how their comments from the consultation in January have helped to shape the design.
Durham City Vision has secured more than £5m of funding from One North East the Urban Rural Renaissance Initiative, the Durham Villages Regeneration Company and the private sector to fund a major renovation of the Market Place and Vennels - the “Heart of the City”.
The Market Place has been at the centre of daily life for generations of Durham residents as a place to shop and a place to meet, and as a focal point for all kinds of events and celebrations.
It has a long history and fine buildings, but it has also frequently evolved over the centuries but has not received any real investment since it was last remodeled in 1974. The Vennels were once the arteries of the mediaeval city but can seem dark and unwelcoming today.
Comments from the exhibition have now been collated and will be reviewed over the next couple of weeks (by 1st June 2009).
Durham City Vision doesn’t want to do anything that would alter the essential character and historic environment of Durham City. However, all the consultation that led to the publication of the Vision Masterplan shows that Durham residents, workers and visitors to the city feel it would benefit from a sympathetic facelift of the Market Place and Vennels. Our aim is to enhance them for the physical, economic and cultural benefit of the people of Durham as well as those who work, study and visit here.
